Andorra aspires to receive for the first time the world’s most important Alpine ski event in terms of organisation and popularity. The country of the Pyrenees and the Andorran Federation of Ski (FAE) will impendingly submit their candidacy to the International Federation of Ski (FIS) to celebrate the World Championships in 2027. Never before have the Pyrenees embraced such an imposing sporting milestone. The countdown begins when during the one-year period, the Principality will be measured to large names such as Crans-Montana (Switzerland) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany).

The resolution reached the village of Villamoura (Portugal) during the FIS Congress in May 2022 with the vote of the 17 members of the FIS Council, who determined the elected seat.

Global Dimension

World Championships are held every two years, last for more than 15 days and are held during February, coinciding with the high season in the snow sector. The event consists of 13 tests that move more than 750 athletes from over 70 countries. The organisation provides for the invaluable support of more than 500 volunteers, the soul of the event. For on-site racing coverage, more than 1,000 communication professionals are moved and the tests are offered live on more than 100 television stations worldwide. As far as the hotel occupation is concerned, the forecast is to take over 50,000 hotel nights to accommodate athletes, sports family and the media, among others.

Cortina de Ampezzo (Italy) has hosted the last edition, and the stations of Courchevel-Méribel (France) and Saalbach (Austria) will be the next venues in 2023 and 2025, respectively. Due to the size and characteristics of the event, the venue is chosen with a 5-year margin to work in the organization.

Operational budget of EUR 40 million

The guideline for the organisation of unos Campeonatos de l’Monto is a sum of EUR 40 million, which comes from los derechos de TV y sponsoro. Project Viability

Following the successful balance sheet that the FIS made on the organisation of the 2019 FIFA World Cup Finals, it is the same international federation which, at the time, encourages Andorra to analyse the viability of a World Cup in the country of the Pyrenees.

Live from country television

The current health situation caused by COVID-19 has forced the organization to seek a formula to reach the entire population in the Principality. For this reason, the announcement was made via a special program of Andorra Television and streaming via its website. The general manager of the candidacy, David Hidalgo, has been responsible for giving visibility to this historic moment in which the President of the Government of Andorra, Xavier Espot, the President of Grandvalira-ENSISA and Consul de Canillo, Francesc Camp and the President of the Andorran Federation of Ski (FAE), Josep Pintat.
